A Milanese shopping trip

Most visitors to Milan might find themselves 500 Euro out of pocket for a Louis Vuitton purse, Prada shoes or Gucci dress. But on a recent shopping trip to the fashion capital we splashed out on true luxury items – soy sauce, sesame oil, curry paste and capers.

The difference between a city of 8 million (Milan) and 1 million (Zagreb) is evident in the range of foreign foods available. We let out squees of delight when we came across a genuine Chinese grocery store. Cheap abundant soy sauce! Tsingtao tallies! Baby corn in a can! Water chestnuts! Seaweed! Instant miso soup! Pork floss!!! Okay, not that so much.

We also stocked up on ‘regular’ stuff like pasta, olives and capers. Of course, we can get those things in Zagreb but not at this quality and not this cheap. I don’t understand why some things which are made just across the border can be so expensive here – especially olive oil. I would’ve thought EU entry may have changed that, but not so much.

Oh, and those gorgeous Prada shoes? Totally bought by C in Zagreb for 50Euro (second hand)
