Sushi, Sake & Snow in Zagreb

We went out to the advent markets for sushi tonight. We drank Asahi and it snowed!

There was a girl at the sushi bar who was very unimpressed that it was snowing. We told her that in Australia it snows for five minutes on one day every year and then everyone tries to ski on it. I guess that’s not entirely true, but like drop bears and riding kangaroos to school, we Australians like to spin a yarn and confuse foreigners.

We’ve been several times now to the Fuliranje Market sushi bar – they have a stall there in preparation for their new store opening soon. We’re super excited because this is really good sushi. It’s not even remotely fancy, just solid, good, fresh flavours. I’ve had easily the worst miso of my entire life in Zagreb and it’s good to know that there’s something opening up which is going to introduce Zagrepčanis to good Japanese fast food. And judging by how the locals are snapping up those bento boxes I think it’s going to be quite the success.

The boy who usually works the stall is a very cute (if I may say so) Libyan. He came to Zagreb when he was 16 to study graphic design at an art high school. He didn’t speak a word of Croatian at the time and I can’t fathom how and why he decided to come here. But there you go. A cute Libyan artist serves me sushi and sake in Zagreb when it snows. It sure is a funny old world.
